Ba Chua Xu Festival
08 May 2018 - 12 May 2018 | Mekong Delta

Once a year, Vietnamese in the southern province of An Giang Province make a pilgrimage up Sam Mountain to worship Ba Chua Xu (Lady of Religion) and to perform a series of rites for the statue of Ba Chua. Chanting and processions are part of the annual ceremony.

Legend says Sam Mountain was once home to many invaders. Some of the invaders climbed up Sam Mountain and found a beautiful stone statue, which they attempted to take but couldn’t move. At the same time, a little village girl who was playing began shaking and then revealed herself as Chua Xu Thanh May. She instructed the villagers to go to the mountain and retrieve the broken statue and leave it at a designated spot. Today, the statue remains at the same location where the visitors left it, and is a sacred site of worship, attracting almost two million pilgrims per year.
